Flash memory is a non-volatile (semipermanent) electrically programmable (i.e. writable) memory with arbitrary access. The memory is internally organized in blocks and unlike EEPROM type memories, each block can be filled with information (programmed) separately (the content of other blocks is preserved). The memory is used as ROM type memory, e.g. for storing firmware (e.g. in embedded devices). The advantage of this memory is that it can be reprogrammed, changing its contents (e.g. reprogramming with newer firmware versions) without removing it from the device using a minimum of auxiliary circuitry. Therefore, it is now mainly used as the basis for capacitive storage media - cards, e.g. SD, miniSD and microSD format. (WiKi)
