The MAX7219 circuit is an exciter directly designed for controlling 8x8 LED matrices (or up to eight seven-segment displays). For communication with the microcontroller only 3 data wires and a power and ground wire are sufficient. In addition to these facts, the MAX7219 circuit blocks can be cascaded to create an LED matrix display size of up to 8x64 pixels. The integrated circuit has both input and output and therefore appears to be pass-through for data. Based on the library options, a maximum of 8 devices, i.e. 8 MAX7219 circuits, can be controlled. Each control circuit controls 1 LED matrix.
