The principle of operation of the capacitive reader is based on the use of the capacitance difference between the sensor plate and the finger surface (elevations and depressions). The sensor represents one plate of the capacitor and the other plate is interpreted by individual locations on the finger. The impression is thus obtained from the pixels in digital form. To read the image, the finger is placed on a sensitive surface equipped with a large number of electrodes. These convert the fingerprint capacitively into a digital image, which is further processed. The papillary lines are more adjacent to the substrate than the gaps between them, so they have a higher capacitive resistance.
