Relays are mechanical switches controlled by an elctromagnet. You use them to switch larger loads using much less current and sometimes less voltage. They work by an electromagnet pulling or letting go of an iron armature, which switches the contacts on or off.
Unlike SSR relays, there is no voltage drop across the contacts and so it gets much less hot.
